# What are the best times to DoorDash?

**DoorDash's own guidance names three busy windows: lunch from 11 am to 2 pm, dinner from 4:30 to 8 pm, and weekend late nights from 10 pm to 1 am.** Bad weather, big games and holiday weekends push demand up further. Start a little before the rush, near a cluster of busy restaurants, and check the Promos tab for Peak Pay. In pilot areas everyone can now Dash Now without scheduling, so scheduling matters less than it used to.

## The busy windows

| Window | Time | What Dashers report |
|---|---|---|
| **Lunch** | 11 am–2 pm | Short trips from offices and downtown; strongest on weekdays. |
| **Dinner** | 4:30–8 pm | Usually the best window of the day; Sunday dinner is often the busiest of the week. |
| **Late night** | 10 pm–1 am (weekends) | Fewer Dashers online, fast food and convenience orders; plan for safety. |
| **Between rushes** | 2–4:30 pm | Slow for food; Shop & Deliver (grocery, retail, convenience) can fill the gap. |

The times come from DoorDash's 2026 Dasher blog; the notes in the last column are common driver observations, not DoorDash data. Every market differs, so keep a log of your own earnings by hour for a few weeks.

## Dash Now vs scheduling

- **Dash Now:** go online immediately if your area needs Dashers. If the button says "Schedule a Dash", the area is full right now.
- **Schedule:** in the Schedule tab, pick a day, a starting point and a time slot, then tap Save Dash. Missing slots mean the area has reached scheduled capacity; check back later.
- **30-minute rule:** within 30 minutes of a scheduled dash you cannot book another one or extend the current one.
- **Overall Dasher Rating pilot areas:** all Dashers can Dash Now at any time, and the Schedule tab shows suggested busy slots instead of every slot. Higher Rewards tiers get priority on offers, so a Silver Dasher may wait longer for the first offer than a Platinum one.
- **Dasher Rewards:** qualifying Dashers can schedule up to 6 days ahead, starting at 3 p.m. each day.

## Use the map and promotions

- **Hotspots** show as flames on the map: red for high demand now, black for areas with strong recent demand. DoorDash says the map refreshes every ten minutes.
- **Zone wait times** on the map show how long Dashers are waiting for offers in each area.
- **Peak Pay** is tied to the starting point where you begin the dash, so start the dash in the zone with the bonus.
- **Challenges and Streaks** reward a number of deliveries in a set time or in a row. Accept a low offer for a Challenge only if the bonus covers the loss.

## Weather, events and holidays

Rain, snow and big games keep people at home. DoorDash also runs weather-related Peak Pay in some areas. Only drive in conditions you can handle safely; no bonus covers an accident, and DoorDash does not pay tolls, parking or tickets.

## Match the earning mode to the hour

DoorDash itself suggests Earn per Offer for busy periods, when good offers come often, and Earn by Time for slower or unpredictable ones. Switching mid-day is allowed. In California, Prop 22 requires a 6-hour break after 12 hours of dash time within 24 hours, so plan long days around it.

## A simple weekly plan (illustrative)

1. Pick 4–5 dinner shifts, including Friday to Sunday.
2. Add 2–3 weekday lunches if you live near offices or downtown.
3. Try one late-night weekend shift and compare it with your dinner log.
4. After four weeks, drop the hours with the lowest earnings per hour after costs (see [offer math](https://gigearningsguide.com/guides/doordash-which-offers-to-accept.html)).

## Frequently asked questions

**What is the best time to DoorDash?**

DoorDash names lunch (11 am to 2 pm), dinner (4:30 to 8 pm) and weekend late nights (10 pm to 1 am) as the busiest times. Dinner is the strongest window in most markets, according to Dashers.

**Do you have to schedule to DoorDash?**

No, you can Dash Now if your area needs Dashers. In Overall Dasher Rating pilot areas, all Dashers can Dash Now at any time without scheduling.

**Why does my Dasher app say Schedule a Dash instead of Dash Now?**

It means your area has enough Dashers at the moment. Check back later, pick another starting point or schedule a future slot.

**Does Peak Pay apply if I drive into another zone?**

Yes. Peak Pay follows the starting point where you began the dash, even if a delivery ends in a zone without Peak Pay.
