# Is DoorDash worth it in 2026?

**DoorDash can be worth it in 2026 as flexible side income if you dash at lunch and dinner peaks in a dense area and keep your miles low: independent Solo data shows a median of $16.61 gross per active hour across 101 US cities, but after car costs and unpaid waiting time, net pay per hour online often lands around $3 to $9 before taxes (see the worked example below).** About 49% of that gross is customer tips. The figure counts only time on an order, not time waiting for offers, and nothing has been taken out for gas, wear or taxes.

The honest answer depends on three things you control: miles per hour of work, how much of your online time is spent waiting, and how strict you are about which offers you accept.

## What Dashers gross in 2026

Solo (worksolo.com) publishes pay data from gig workers who connect their earnings accounts. Its DoorDash city pages cover 101 US cities, updated between August 26 and October 21, 2026.

| Measure (DoorDash, Solo data) | Value | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| **Median gross per active hour** | $16.61 | Half of city rows are above, half below. Includes tips. |
| **Middle half of cities** | $15.45 – $17.60 | The 25th to 75th percentile across city rows. DoorDash pay is tightly bunched. |
| **Median base pay per active hour** | $8.39 | What DoorDash itself pays, before tips. |
| **Share of gross from tips** | about 49% | Roughly half of your pay depends on customers tipping. |
| **Lowest and highest city rows** | $12.41 – $20.49 | Fresno (CA) at the bottom, Boise (ID) at the top. |

An **active hour** runs from accepting an order to completing it. Time spent waiting for the next offer is not in it, so your pay per hour online is lower. To see how your state compares with other apps, open the [gig pay map by state](https://gigearningsguide.com/earnings-map.html).

## How DoorDash compares with other gig apps

| App | Median gross per active hour (Solo, 2026) | Note |
|---|---|---|
| **Amazon Flex** | $24.31 | Only 22 city rows; block pay set in advance |
| **Grubhub** | $18.77 | Fewer markets than DoorDash |
| **Instacart** | $18.22 | Includes in-store shopping time |
| **DoorDash** | $16.61 | 101 city rows; the most widely available |
| **Uber Eats** | $14.80 | DoorDash paid more in 82 of 97 shared cities |

DoorDash is rarely the top payer per active hour, but it is available almost everywhere and usually has the most orders, which means less waiting. That is why many drivers keep it as their base app and add a second one; see [DoorDash vs Uber Eats](https://gigearningsguide.com/guides/doordash-vs-uber-eats.html) and [DoorDash vs Instacart](https://gigearningsguide.com/guides/doordash-vs-instacart.html).

## How DoorDash pays (in one paragraph)

Each delivery pays base pay plus 100% of the customer's tip plus any promotion such as Peak Pay or Challenges. In Earn per Offer mode, base pay runs from about $2 to $10 or more per offer; in Earn by Time mode you get a guaranteed rate for active time instead. California (Prop 22), New York City and Seattle add a legal pay floor. The full breakdown is in [DoorDash pay explained](https://gigearningsguide.com/guides/doordash-pay-explained.html).

## The cost most people forget: your car

The IRS business mileage rate for 2026 is **72.5 cents per mile (January–June)** and **76 cents per mile (July–December)**. It is meant to cover the whole cost of a car: gas, maintenance, tires, insurance and depreciation, so it is a fair upper-end estimate of what each work mile costs. An older, paid-off, fuel-efficient car costs less per mile; work out your own number if you can. Every work mile is also deductible at that rate (see [DoorDash taxes and 1099](https://gigearningsguide.com/guides/doordash-taxes-1099.html)).

## Worked example: one week, two kinds of market

Both Dashers are online for 25 hours and earn the Solo median of $16.61 per active hour. Car cost uses the IRS rate for the second half of 2026 (76¢ per mile). Numbers are illustrative.

| Week | A: dense area, dinner peaks | B: spread-out suburb, slow hours |
|---|---|---|
| **Hours online** | 25 | 25 |
| **Active hours** | 19 | 15 |
| **Work miles (incl. drive back)** | 120 | 220 |
| **Gross pay incl. tips** | $315.59 | $249.15 |
| **Car cost at 76¢/mile** | −$91.20 | −$167.20 |
| **Net before tax** | $224.39 | $81.95 |
| **Net per active hour** | $11.81 | $5.46 |
| **Net per hour online** | $8.98 | $3.28 |

Same app, same gross rate, almost three times the net. Self-employment tax (15.3% of 92.35% of net earnings) and income tax then come out of what is left.

## Who DoorDash tends to suit

- **People who want to start fast and work any hour.** Dash Now and scheduled dashes let you work when you have time.
- **People in dense areas** where restaurants and customers are a few miles apart.
- **People who will decline weak offers.** DoorDash has no minimum acceptance rate to keep dashing; what you need is a 4.2 customer rating and a 90% completion rate ([ratings and Dasher Rewards](https://gigearningsguide.com/guides/doordash-ratings-dasher-rewards.html)).
- **Multi-appers** who use DoorDash to fill gaps between orders from another app.
- **Dashers in California, New York City or Seattle,** where local law sets a pay floor.

## Who it often does not suit

- **People in rural or spread-out zones** with long drives and long waits.
- **People with a costly car,** such as a financed truck or a thirsty SUV.
- **Anyone who needs a predictable paycheck.** Half of the pay is tips and order volume swings by hour, day and season.
- **Anyone who has not set money aside for taxes.** Nothing is withheld.

## How to make DoorDash more worth it

1. **Track every mile and every hour online** for two to three weeks, then divide.
2. **Set a minimum dollars per mile** from your real car cost and decline offers below it ([which offers to accept](https://gigearningsguide.com/guides/doordash-which-offers-to-accept.html)).
3. **Dash the peaks,** not the dead hours ([best times to dash](https://gigearningsguide.com/guides/doordash-best-times-to-dash.html)).
4. **Add a second app** to cut waiting time ([multi-apping safely](https://gigearningsguide.com/guides/instacart-multi-apping.html)).
