Which DoorDash offers are worth accepting?
Accept a DoorDash offer when its guaranteed pay clears both your per-mile floor and your hourly target after your own driving costs. Dashers commonly cite about $1 per mile as a bare minimum and $1.50 to $2 per mile as a good offer, but the right number depends on your car, your market and how busy it is. Count every mile, including the drive back from the drop-off. The figure on the offer screen is DoorDash's guaranteed minimum; a tip added later is a bonus, not something to count on.
Step 1: know your cost per mile
Your cash cost per mile is gas plus wear (tires, oil, brakes, repairs) plus the part of depreciation and insurance that driving adds. It is not the IRS rate. The IRS rate (72.5¢ a mile for Jan–Jun 2026, 76¢ for Jul–Dec 2026) is a tax deduction, not what you spend.
Illustrative example: gas at $3.40 a gallon in a car that gets 28 mpg is about 12¢ a mile. Add an assumed 10–20¢ for maintenance, tires and extra depreciation and the cash cost is roughly 22–32¢ a mile. Use your own receipts; a truck or an older car can cost much more.
Step 2: count the real miles
The miles on the offer cover pickup and drop-off. They do not cover the drive back to a busy area if the drop-off is somewhere quiet. For a drop-off out of the zone, add the return trip before you calculate.
Step 3: run the 10-second check
- $ per mile: offer pay ÷ (offer miles + return miles). Compare with your floor.
- $ per hour: offer pay ÷ estimated minutes × 60. The "deliver by" time is a guide; add time for slow restaurants you know.
- The restaurant: places with long waits or tricky parking cost time that the offer does not show.
- The drop-off: large apartment complexes, gated communities and hotels can add 5–10 minutes.
- Stacked orders: judge the combined pay against the combined miles and time.
| Illustrative offer | Pay | Miles (incl. return) | $/mile | Est. time | $/hour |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Short, close restaurant | $7.50 | 3.5 | $2.14 | 18 min | $25.00 |
| Long drive, decent pay | $11.00 | 12 | $0.92 | 35 min | $18.86 |
| Low pay, no visible tip | $3.25 | 5 | $0.65 | 22 min | $8.86 |
The numbers are made up to show the method; they are not typical pay. In this example, the first offer is a clear yes, the second depends on how busy it is, and the third is a decline for most drivers.
What about "hidden tips"?
DoorDash says the offer amount is the minimum guaranteed pay, and that customers can tip at checkout or after delivery. A later tip shows up in your Earnings tab after the order. So some low offers do end up paying more, but you cannot tell which ones in advance. DoorDash has not published how often this happens. Drivers report it is not frequent enough to plan around, so judge the guaranteed number.
Low offers are also more common than they were. NYC's labor department reported in 2026 that tips for DoorDash and Uber Eats workers in the city fell by more than $550 million, and says the apps changed their checkout screens in ways that made tipping harder. That is one reason many Dashers see more $2–$4 offers with no tip.
What declining costs you
- Acceptance rate: no minimum to stay active, but a lower rate can drop your Dasher Rewards tier and with it your priority on high-paying offers (see ratings and Dasher Rewards).
- Earn by Time: one decline per hour only. If you want to be picky, use Earn per Offer.
- Time-outs count as declines. Tap Pause when you are not ready for offers.
Never use auto-accept bots, offer filters that interfere with the app, or GPS tricks. DoorDash's policy lists scraping, automated tools and location spoofing as grounds for deactivation.
Watch: a Dasher who still takes $1 per mile
Your Driver Mike interviews Jonas, a Dasher the channel says has more than 11,000 deliveries, about working several submarkets, Platinum status and why he still accepts some offers at $1.00 per mile. It is a useful counterpoint to strict per-mile rules: the right floor depends on your own costs, market and time of day.

Adjust your floor through the day
During the lunch and dinner rush you can afford a higher floor because another offer will come soon. In slow hours, a slightly lower floor near home or a busy area may beat sitting unpaid. Write down your floor for each daypart and review it weekly against your real earnings and miles. If you run a second app, the same per-mile math applies to both (see multi-apping safely).
Frequently asked questions
What is a good dollar per mile on DoorDash?
Many Dashers use about $1 per mile as a minimum and treat $1.50 to $2 or more as good, counting the drive back. Your own number depends on your car costs, your market and the time of day.
Can DoorDash drivers see the tip before accepting?
The offer shows the guaranteed total, which includes any tip added at checkout. Customers can also tip after delivery, which can raise the final pay but is not shown in advance.
Do DoorDash hidden tips exist?
Customers can tip after delivery, so some offers pay more than shown. DoorDash has not published how often this happens, so judge offers on the guaranteed amount.
Does declining offers hurt you on DoorDash?
There is no minimum acceptance rate, so declining will not get you deactivated. It can lower your Dasher Rewards tier, and in Earn by Time you may decline only one offer per hour.
