How do you calculate your real Instacart hourly pay?

Your real Instacart hourly rate is (batch pay + tips − vehicle costs) ÷ every hour you were working, including time waiting for offers and driving back. Gross pay per batch overstates earnings because it ignores unpaid waiting, return miles and what your car costs per mile. Track two to three weeks of shifts to get a reliable number, then subtract taxes separately to see what you keep.

The formula

Net hourly = (batch pay + tips + bonuses − vehicle running cost) ÷ total hours online

  • Total hours online includes waiting in parking lots and driving to your first store.
  • Vehicle running cost is fuel or charging, maintenance, tires and depreciation per mile, times all miles driven for work.

Worked example (illustrative)

ItemValue
Batch pay + tips for the shift$180.00
Hours online (incl. 1.5 h waiting)7.5 h
Miles driven110
Running cost at $0.30/mile (example)−$33.00
Net before tax$147.00
Net hourly$19.60

Counting only "active" time (6 hours) and ignoring car costs would show $30 an hour, a very different picture. Your numbers will differ by market, vehicle and hours; this is not an earnings estimate.

What about taxes?

Shoppers are independent contractors, so no tax is withheld. Self-employment tax and income tax apply to your profit after deductions such as business miles. See quarterly taxes for shoppers.

Five levers that move your net hourly most

  1. Less waiting: work proven windows (see best times to shop).
  2. Fewer empty miles: wait at the store nearest your last drop-off.
  3. Better batch selection: pay per total mile and per expected hour.
  4. Bigger baskets: percentage tips scale with the basket.
  5. Faster shopping: a lower SPI means more batches per shift.

Frequently asked questions

How much do Instacart shoppers make per hour?

It varies widely by market, hours, vehicle and batch selection. The useful figure is your own net hourly rate: pay plus tips minus vehicle costs, divided by all hours online including waiting.

Should I count waiting time when calculating Instacart pay?

Yes. Waiting for offers is time you are working but not paid for, so include it to see your real hourly rate.

What is my car's cost per mile?

Add fuel or charging, maintenance, tires and depreciation for the year and divide by miles driven. The IRS standard mileage rate is a broad benchmark that also includes insurance and fixed costs.

Is Instacart pay before or after taxes?

Before. Shoppers are independent contractors with no withholding, so set money aside for self-employment and income tax.

Go deeper. Chapter 14 of the guide builds a complete example week with costs, and Chapter 13 covers taxes and mileage tracking with a ready-made tracker spreadsheet. Get the full guide or read chapters 1–2 free.
