How does Instacart Heavy Pay work?

Heavy Pay is extra batch pay that Instacart adds when an order includes heavy items such as cases of water, large bags of pet food or cat litter. It appears in the batch pay breakdown when it applies. The weight threshold and amount can change, so check the current rule in the Shopper app. If a customer adds heavy items mid-order, or a clearly heavy batch shows no Heavy Pay, you can ask Support to review it after completing the batch.

How to spot heavy batches before accepting

  • Open the item list on the offer and look for cases of water or soda, 30–40 lb pet food, litter and bulk rice or flour.
  • Compare items and units: "18 items (64 units)" often means multiples of heavy goods.
  • Read delivery notes: "no elevator", "3rd floor" or "back door" multiply the effort.
  • Check the pay breakdown for a Heavy Pay line.

When to ask Support

  1. The customer added heavy items after you accepted.
  2. The batch clearly includes heavy items but no Heavy Pay appeared.

Ask after completing the batch, with specifics:

"Hello, I just completed this batch. The order included three 40-pack water cases (over 125 lb total), but Heavy Pay was not included in the batch pay. Could you please review the item weights and apply Heavy Pay if eligible? Thank you."

Do not overuse requests

Shoppers report that frequent, unjustified pay requests can trigger an account review. Ask only when you are genuinely owed it, and never exaggerate weights.

Tools that make heavy orders easier

  • A folding wagon for the walk from car to door.
  • Lift with your legs; take two trips rather than one risky one.
  • Leave water cases at the threshold the customer specifies, never blocking a screen door.

Even with Heavy Pay, a batch may not be worth it. Run it through the batch checklist first.
