How does Instacart Cart Star (Diamond Cart) work?
Cart Star is Instacart's shopper rewards program, measured by completed orders each calendar quarter while you keep at least a 4.7 rating and adequate shopping quality. Shoppers report example thresholds of about 20 orders for Gold, 100 for Platinum and 200 for Diamond Cart, with Diamond's main benefit being earlier access to some batches. The tier you earn in one quarter applies during the next, but your order counter resets to zero on the first day of each new quarter.
Tiers and what they offer
| Tier | Orders per quarter (shopper-reported) | Main benefits shoppers describe |
|---|---|---|
| Gold Cart | ≈ 20 | Partner discounts (fuel, maintenance) |
| Platinum Cart | ≈ 100 | Larger discounts, customer-facing badge |
| Diamond Cart | ≈ 200 | Priority access to some batches, extra perks |
Instacart can change thresholds and benefits; the Cart Star screen in your Shopper app is the source of truth.
Orders, not batches
Shoppers report that a batch with three customers counts as three orders. Double and triple batches therefore move you toward a tier faster, provided they are worth taking on their own merits.
The quarterly reset
- Q1: January 1 – March 31
- Q2: April 1 – June 30
- Q3: July 1 – September 30
- Q4: October 1 – December 31
Two things happen at once. You keep the tier you earned last quarter for the whole of this quarter. And your counter starts again at zero, so you must re-qualify during this quarter to hold that tier next quarter.
The vacation cliff
Say you are Diamond in Q1 and leave in mid-March with 175 orders. You return on April 5. Because you never reached 200 in Q1, you spend Q2 at Platinum, without Diamond priority access, and need 200 new orders to get back. Before a long break in March, June, September or December, check your count and finish the remaining orders first. Short late-evening pharmacy or convenience orders are a common way to close a small gap.
What priority access means in practice
Shoppers describe some batches being shown to higher tiers a short time before everyone else. Instacart has not published the window length or which batches it covers. Together with being physically close to the store, it is one of the biggest reported factors in seeing large orders first.
Shopping quality
Shoppers report tiers now also depend on a shopping quality assessment: damaged items, wrong items, missing items and found rate. Marking items "not found" without really looking can count against you.
