What can Instacart shoppers do about tip baiting?
Tip baiting is when a customer attaches a high tip to get an order accepted quickly, then cuts it to $0 after a problem-free delivery. Instacart has announced that if a customer removes a tip without reporting an order issue, it pays the shopper up to $10 in tip protection. Check the current eligibility terms in the Shopper app, and contact Support if the protection does not appear automatically.
How common is it?
Most customers do not change tips, and many raise them after good service. Tip baiting gets attention because it is frustrating, not because it happens on most orders. Customers can usually edit a tip for a limited time after delivery; check the current window in your app.
How to claim tip protection
- Confirm the order had no reported issues (missing, damaged or wrong items).
- Check your earnings for an automatic protection payment.
- If it is missing, write to Support: "The customer removed the tip without reporting any order issues. Requesting the tip protection coverage."
Lowering the risk
- Weigh the base pay. If a batch only works because of an unusually large tip from a new customer, ask whether the base pay alone covers your miles and time.
- Communicate. A first message, photo replacements and an "on my way" note make customers far less likely to cut a tip.
- Protect percentage tips. Refunding items without asking can shrink a percentage tip even when the customer is happy (see out-of-stock replacements).
- Leave proof. A clear in-app delivery photo with the door number helps if a tip cut comes with a "not delivered" claim.
Can you avoid a tip-baiting customer later?
Do not keep your own list of customer names or addresses; that likely breaks the shopper agreement and privacy rules. If there was a genuine conduct problem, ask Support to unpair you, describing exactly what happened. A tip reduction on its own is not a safety issue.
