How does the Instacart cancellation rate work?
Your Instacart cancellation rate is the share of accepted batches you cancel, and shoppers commonly report it is counted over roughly your last 100 accepted batches. Instacart does not publish one fixed limit everywhere, but shoppers often cite about 15% as the level where account reviews become likely. Keep your own ceiling far lower, around 7 to 8%, so one breakdown or emergency does not push you over. Declining an offer is not a cancellation.
What counts as a cancellation?
- Counts: accepting a batch and then removing yourself from it, in the app or through Support, when the record shows a shopper-initiated cancellation.
- Does not count: declining an offer, or letting it expire on screen.
- Sometimes excluded: cancellations caused by things outside your control (store system outages, app crashes, a vehicle breakdown) when Support records them that way. That is Support's decision under current policy, not an automatic right.
How the rolling window works
If the rate is calculated over your most recent accepted batches, an old cancellation stops counting only after enough new batches push it out of the window. Shoppers report that canceling a whole multi-customer batch counts as one cancellation, not one per customer.
| Cancellations in last 100 batches | Rate | Risk (shopper-reported) |
|---|---|---|
| 0–5 | 0–5% | Comfortable buffer |
| 6–10 | 6–10% | Watch closely; avoid new ones |
| 11–15+ | 11–15%+ | Account review becomes more likely |
The five most common avoidable cancellations
- Accepting by reflex. Read heavy items, distance and drop-off notes before you tap Accept (see how to pick good batches).
- Agreeing to a chatbot "remove yourself" prompt. When a store's registers are down, ask for a live agent instead of accepting the bot's offer to unassign you.
- Losing a batch to an app crash. Keep the app updated. If it crashes during an add-on, report it to Support at once as a technical issue.
- One bad customer in a double batch. Ask Support to remove only that order, clearly: "Please do not cancel the entire batch. Only remove Customer B." Give the real reason.
- Car trouble with no record. Message the customer, then Support, and ask whether the cancellation can be recorded as a vehicle breakdown. Save the ticket number.
Never invent a reason
Calling a low tip a "safety issue" or claiming a customer asked to cancel when they did not can put your account at risk. Support chats are recorded. Describe what actually happened; Support may decline, but you stay honest.
How to bring a high rate down
The only reliable way is to complete clean batches so older cancellations fall out of the window. For a while, take batches you are sure you can finish: stores you know, reasonable distances and no heavy surprises.
Frequently asked questions
What is the Instacart cancellation rate limit?
Instacart does not publish one fixed limit for every market. Shoppers often cite about 15% as the level where reviews become likely. Check the policy in your Shopper app and keep your own rate well below it.
How many batches does the Instacart cancellation rate cover?
Shoppers commonly report it covers roughly your last 100 accepted batches. Old cancellations stop counting as new batches push them out.
Does declining a batch count as a cancellation?
No. Declining or ignoring an offer is not a cancellation. Only batches you accept and then cancel count.
Can Support remove a cancellation from my rate?
Sometimes, for issues outside your control such as a store system outage, an app crash or a vehicle breakdown. It is up to Support and current policy; ask directly and save the ticket number.
