How does the Instacart verification code scam work?
In this scam, someone places a tiny order, then calls the shopper pretending to be Instacart Support and asks them to read back a verification code that just arrived by text. That code lets the scammer into the account to change the bank details and cash out the balance. Real Support never needs your verification code, password or bank details. If anyone asks, hang up and contact Support yourself through the app.
How the scam unfolds
- The bait order: one banana, a pack of gum, a $2 item.
- The call: soon after you accept, your phone rings. Caller ID may be spoofed to show "Instacart".
- The crisis: "We detected a suspicious login" or "the customer reported an emergency, we need to verify you."
- The code: a code arrives by text and the caller asks you to read it out.
- The takeover: the scammer changes the phone number and bank card, then cashes out.
Red flags
- Any request to read out a code, password or card number.
- Urgency and threats ("your account will be deactivated in 10 minutes").
- Inbound calls claiming to be Support right after a tiny order.
- Requests to install apps or click links sent by text.
If it already happened
- Contact Instacart Support through the app's Help section immediately.
- Change your password and the password of the email tied to the account.
- Call your bank if card or bank details were exposed.
- Report the scam to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
Other security habits
- Take selfie checks in good light, without sunglasses or a hat, to avoid failed verifications.
- Never share or rent your account; selfie checks exist to stop it.
- Keep the Shopper app updated.
