How do tips work for Uber Eats couriers in 2026?
The total on an Uber Eats offer already includes the tip the customer added at checkout, and you keep 100% of tips. Customers can still change a tip after delivery. Since November 2025 Uber has been rolling out a tip guarantee: on offers with a "Guaranteed" badge, Uber covers the difference if the tip is lowered after delivery, except in cases such as cancelled, reassigned or not-delivered orders. Customers can also add a tip after delivery, which you keep in full.
Where the tip is on the offer
Uber's offer card shows one total: the base fare plus any upfront tip. It does not always show the tip as a separate line before you accept. Couriers often estimate it by comparing the total with what a no-tip trip of the same length usually pays in their market; Uber has not published the base-fare formula, so treat that estimate as rough. After the trip, the earnings breakdown shows the base fare, tip and any adjustments separately.
The tip guarantee
- What it does: an offer with a "Guaranteed" badge pays at least the total shown, tip included. If the customer lowers the tip after delivery, Uber covers the difference. If the customer raises it, you keep 100% of the increase.
- Where: rolling out on US delivery trips since November 2025, expanding by area. Uber notifies couriers in the app when it is available.
- Which trips: completed deliveries placed through Uber. Orders placed through third parties may not be included.
When the guarantee does not apply
| Situation | What happens to the tip |
|---|---|
| Percentage tip, basket changes | The tip can go up or down with the order total (common on grocery orders). |
| Customer reports not receiving the order and is reimbursed | No tip is collected. |
| Order cancelled | No tip; on a batched trip, earnings may be adjusted. |
| Order reassigned | The tip goes to the courier who completes it. |
| Suspicious activity or guideline violations flagged | Not covered. |
| Customer's payment fails | No tip is collected. |
Tip baiting: what it is and how much it matters now
"Tip baiting" is couriers' term for a customer who adds a large tip at checkout to attract a courier, then lowers or removes it after delivery. Couriers report it has happened on every major app. On Guaranteed offers, Uber now absorbs the reduction, so the main remaining risk is on offers without the badge and on the exceptions above, especially "not delivered" claims. That makes clean proof of delivery more important than ever: follow the drop-off instructions and take a clear photo when the app asks for one.
Habits that protect tips
- Keep the order intact: drinks upright in a carrier, hot and cold items apart, bag closed and sealed when the restaurant provides a seal.
- Follow drop-off instructions exactly (hand to me vs. leave at door, gate codes, building notes).
- Message only when it helps: a short note when the restaurant is delayed, or when you arrive at a hard-to-find building.
- Clear drop-off photo: door number or a recognizable feature in frame, no people.
- On Shop & Pay orders, send substitutions through the app so the customer approves them; refunds can reduce a percentage tip.
New York City: 10% tip prompt
NYC Local Laws 107 and 108 require restaurant and grocery delivery apps to offer customers a tipping option at or before checkout, with a suggested tip of at least 10%. They took effect January 26, 2026, after federal judges declined to block them; Uber and DoorDash have appealed. NYC's minimum pay rate for delivery workers is paid before tips (see how Uber Eats pays couriers).
Watch: the tip guarantee and its exceptions
On The Rideshare Guy channel, hosts Sergio and Chris explain Uber's guaranteed-tip system: the amount you see upfront is what you get even if the customer lowers the tip. They also cover when the guarantee does not apply, why grocery and shop orders work differently, and whether it really ends tip baiting.

Tips and taxes
Uber includes tips in the gross earnings on your tax documents. Qualified tips may be deductible under the federal "no tax on tips" deduction for 2025 through 2028 (up to $25,000, phased out above $150,000 modified AGI). Goods delivery is on the IRS occupation list. The deduction lowers income tax only, not self-employment tax. See how the no-tax-on-tips deduction works and Uber Eats taxes.
