Is Instacart worth it in 2026?
Instacart can be worth it in 2026 if you live near busy stores and keep your miles low: independent data from Solo shows a median of $18.22 per engaged hour before car costs, but after vehicle costs and unpaid waiting time, net pay per hour logged in can fall to roughly $4 to $10 (see the worked example below). That figure comes from 67 US city rows on Solo Pay Insights, updated between August 26 and October 21, 2026, and includes tips, which make up about 52% of gross pay. It counts only engaged time (shopping and delivering), not every hour you are logged in, and it is gross, before gas, wear and taxes.
So the honest answer depends on three numbers you control: how many miles each hour of work takes, how much of your logged-in time is spent waiting, and how picky you can be with batches. The rest of this page shows the math.
What Instacart shoppers gross in 2026
Solo (worksolo.com) publishes pay data from gig workers who connect their earnings accounts. Its Instacart city pages cover 67 US cities, updated between August 26 and October 21, 2026.
| Measure (Instacart, Solo data) | Value | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Median gross per engaged hour | $18.22 | Half of city rows are above, half below. Includes tips. |
| Middle half of cities | $16.65 – $21.09 | The 25th to 75th percentile across city rows. |
| Share of gross from tips | about 52% | More than half of what you earn depends on customers tipping. |
Two limits matter. First, an engaged hour is time spent on an active batch. Time waiting in a parking lot for an offer is not in it. Second, these numbers are gross: nothing has been subtracted for your car, phone or taxes. To see how your state compares, open the Instacart earnings map by state.
How Instacart compares with other gig apps
| App | Median gross per engaged hour (Solo, 2026) | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Amazon Flex | $24.31 | Only 22 city rows; block-based pay |
| Grubhub | $18.77 | Restaurant delivery |
| Spark (Walmart) | $18.39 | Grocery and retail delivery |
| Instacart | $18.22 | 67 city rows; tips about 52% of gross |
| Shipt | $17.63 | Grocery and retail delivery |
| DoorDash | $16.61 | Restaurant and convenience delivery |
| Uber Eats | $14.80 | Restaurant delivery |
Instacart sits in the middle of the pack on gross pay per engaged hour. The bigger differences between apps usually come from how much waiting time and how many miles each one needs, which these medians do not show. Many shoppers run two apps at once to cut waiting time; see multi-apping with Instacart.
The cost most people forget: your car
The IRS business mileage rate for 2026 is 72.5 cents per mile (January–June) and 76 cents per mile (July–December). It is meant to cover the full cost of running a car: gas, maintenance, tires, insurance and depreciation. It is a fair upper-end proxy for what each work mile really costs you. Your out-of-pocket cost per mile may be lower if you drive an older, paid-off, fuel-efficient car, so work out your own number if you can.
The same rate is also what you can deduct on your taxes, which cuts the tax you owe (see the Instacart mileage deduction). A deduction lowers your tax bill; it does not refund the money you spent on the car.
Worked example: one week, two kinds of market
Both shoppers are logged in for 25 hours and earn the Solo median of $18.22 per engaged hour. Car cost uses the IRS rate for the second half of 2026 (76¢ per mile). Numbers are illustrative.
| Week | A: dense area, busy stores | B: spread-out suburb |
|---|---|---|
| Hours logged in | 25 | 25 |
| Engaged hours | 20 | 16 |
| Work miles (incl. drive back) | 140 | 260 |
| Gross pay incl. tips | $364.40 | $291.52 |
| Car cost at 76¢/mile | −$106.40 | −$197.60 |
| Net before tax | $258.00 | $93.92 |
| Net per engaged hour | $12.90 | $5.87 |
| Net per hour logged in | $10.32 | $3.76 |
Same app, same gross rate, almost three times the net. The difference is miles and waiting. Self-employment tax then takes 15.3% of 92.35% of your net earnings on top of income tax; in example A that is about $36 for the week. Who Instacart tends to suit
- People who need a flexible schedule. Full-service shoppers are independent contractors and choose when to work, with no set shifts.
- People who live close to several busy stores, so delivery and return miles stay short.
- Areas with Costco, Sam's Club or other warehouse stores. Shoppers report that large warehouse orders often carry bigger tips, though they are heavier work. See Costco batches.
- People willing to decline weak batches. Declining does not hurt your rating, and batch selection is where most of the net pay is won or lost (how to pick good batches).
- California shoppers, where Prop 22 guarantees at least 120% of the local minimum wage per engaged hour ($20.28 statewide in 2026) plus $0.37 per engaged mile, with tips paid on top (Prop 22 and Instacart pay).
Who it often does not suit
- People in rural or spread-out areas where each batch means 15 to 25 miles of driving.
- People with a costly or thirsty car, such as a financed truck or an older SUV with poor mileage.
- People who need a predictable paycheck. Tips are about half of gross pay, and order volume changes by hour, day and season.
- People who cannot lift heavy items. Instacart lists being able to lift 40 lb as a requirement.
- Anyone who has not set money aside for taxes. No tax is withheld; plan for quarterly estimated taxes.
How to make it more worth it
- Track every mile and every hour logged in for two to three weeks before deciding.
- Set a minimum per total mile based on your real car cost, and decline batches below it.
- Work the busy windows instead of sitting online in slow hours (best times to shop).
- Deduct your mileage and keep receipts for other deductible costs.
Frequently asked questions
Is Instacart worth it in 2026?
It can be, mainly if you live near busy stores and keep your miles low. Solo data from 67 US cities shows a median of $18.22 gross per engaged hour, but after car costs and unpaid waiting, net pay per hour logged in is often well under that, sometimes below $10.
How much do Instacart shoppers make per hour after expenses?
It depends on miles and waiting time. In an illustrative week at the $18.22 median gross rate with car costs at the IRS 76 cents per mile, net pay ranged from about $3.76 to $10.32 per hour logged in, before taxes.
How much of Instacart pay comes from tips?
About 52% of gross Instacart pay comes from customer tips, according to Solo Pay Insights city data from 2026. Instacart says shoppers keep 100% of tips.
Does Instacart pay more than DoorDash or Uber Eats?
On gross pay per engaged hour in 2026 Solo data, yes: Instacart's median is $18.22, versus $16.61 for DoorDash and $14.80 for Uber Eats. Amazon Flex ($24.31) and Grubhub ($18.77) were higher, and net pay depends on your miles and waiting time.
Is Instacart worth it as a side hustle?
It works best as a flexible side income if you can shop during busy hours near your home and decline low-paying batches. It is a weaker fit if you need steady pay, drive long distances, or cannot lift 40 lb.
What counts as an engaged hour on Instacart?
An engaged hour is time spent actively working a batch, from accepting it to finishing delivery. Time waiting online for an offer is not included, so pay per engaged hour is always higher than pay per hour logged in.
Is Instacart worth it in California?
California shoppers have a Prop 22 floor of 120% of local minimum wage per engaged hour ($20.28 statewide in 2026) plus $0.37 per engaged mile, with tips on top. Waiting time is still unpaid, so car costs and slow hours still matter.
